The Magpies are prepared to make a full transfer offer for the Portuguese midfielder, who spent last season on loan at Tottenham.

Initially, the 31-year-old was leaning towards a move to Aston Villa. However, the Birmingham club's proposal was limited to a loan deal, which did not sit well with Bayern Munich.

Joao Palhinha has become a top priority for Newcastle in midfield after the club missed out on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who opted to remain at Marseille.
