A prominent Muslim supporters' group for Manchester United has issued a strong demand for the immediate resignation of co-owner Jim Ratcliffe. The controversy arises from the billionaire's recent sharp comments about immigration and the declining quality of life in the UK.
In a Saturday interview with the BBC, the founder of the chemicals giant Ineos claimed the country is in decline due to high taxes and an influx of immigrants. Earlier this year, Ratcliffe apologised for stating that the UK had been "colonised by immigrants" — a remark that was condemned by the club's majority owners, the Glazers, who described his position as appalling, while United reiterated its commitment to inclusivity.
In an official statement, the supporters' club remarked:
We condemned his remarks at the time. Ratcliffe apologised, and we hoped he had learned a lesson. Clearly, that has not happened. This week, Sir Jim once again blamed immigrants and benefit recipients for the nation's troubles, asserting that no one shows sufficient toughness to address these issues. We find these comments utterly unacceptable. Players, staff, stewards, and fans of United represent a wide variety of cultures, religions, and countries. Our diversity is not a weakness; it is what makes Manchester United.
Ratcliffe acquired a 27.7% stake in the club in 2024, followed by a massive restructure that saw 450 staff members let go, leadership changes, and the dismissal of two managers. Since 2020, the billionaire has resided for tax purposes in Monaco.
Fans have expressed distrust not just in Ratcliffe but also in the Glazer family. Supporters are accusing the hierarchy of continuously escalating ticket prices, neglecting Old Trafford, and overseeing a decline in performances, with the team managing a mere four points in four Premier League matches and crashing out of the League Cup against Brighton (2-3).
The MUMSC concluded: after a series of empty promises and failures, trust in the owners has been irreparably lost; therefore, the Glazers and Ratcliffe must sell the club and step aside.
