Michael Owen has offered his insights on the upcoming Premier League season, identifying the clubs he believes will enter the title race.
The former England striker is backing Arsenal to defend their championship title but warns that they will face stiff competition from a rejuvenated Liverpool and Chelsea, who have made significant summer investments.
Last season, Mikel Arteta's side ended a 22-year trophy drought by clinching their first Premier League title in over two decades. The Gunners didn’t rest on their laurels, making a splash in the transfer market by acquiring Bruno Guimaraes to bolster their midfield strength.
In an interview with Metro, Owen elaborated on his thoughts about the impending title fight, suggesting that it won’t be a walk in the park for Arsenal.
“I think there could be a few contenders for the title this season,” said Owen.
“Look at Arsenal’s points tally—it didn’t exceed ninety. They could afford to ease off slightly, and with Chelsea not involved in European competitions, they may prove a worthy challenger.”
The landscape of the Premier League has shifted considerably over the summer, with several key managerial appointments. Liverpool has turned to Andoni Iraola to replace the departed Arne Slot, while Chelsea has handed the reins to Xabi Alonso following a disappointing domestic campaign. Meanwhile, Enzo Maresca is making his return to Manchester City.
Owen expresses optimism about the influence of the new Spanish managers on their respective clubs, naming Liverpool and Chelsea as the primary threats to Arsenal’s dominance this season.
“Last season was not Liverpool’s finest hour; their style had slipped and they conceded too many goals,” Owen noted.
“But the departure of Slot and the arrival of Iraola signals a change in tactics. His work at Bournemouth was intriguing, and Liverpool is a bigger club, so the pressure is on him now.”
Chelsea, according to Owen, is a bit of a dark horse in the mix, particularly since they’re unburdened by the distractions of European football this year. The Blues have been active again in the transfer market over the summer.
“Chelsea has splashed the cash once more, but this time they may have a manager who can keep the dressing room in check and get the best out of his players, leading to a more cohesive and stable team,” he stated.
“The absence of European fixtures is a crucial factor that could give them a chance to perform well throughout the season.”
As for other clubs, Michael Carrick is gearing up for his first full season as Manchester United’s permanent manager after stepping in on an interim basis last year. The Red Devils have lofty ambitions, but Owen is concerned that returning to the Champions League may pose challenges for the Manchester side.
Meanwhile, Tottenham are expected to re-enter European contention under Roberto De Zerbi following an expensive summer transfer window that has raised expectations in North London.
“I don’t think they currently possess a squad strong enough,” Owen remarked about United.
“They need to add a few more players to cope with the increased demands of all competitions, particularly in the Champions League. I’d expect Manchester United to be on the lookout for further reinforcements, and I’d be surprised if they didn’t make any moves.”
