The manager of Manchester United, Michael Carrick, has emphasised that the club is better prepared for the return to the Champions League and the subsequent increase in matches. According to Carrick, a busier schedule for the 2026/27 season suits the club more effectively than the limited fixtures they faced last year.
In the previous season, the Red Devils managed only 40 matches due to the lack of European competition and early exits from domestic cup tournaments. This time around, the Manchester side is set to play at least 48 matches, taking into account the newly revised Champions League group stage format.
We are probably much better suited to a season filled with Champions League matches, European competitions, and cup fixtures than we were last year.
I often get asked, 'How will you handle the upcoming season?' For the players, the coaching staff, and for myself, this rhythm feels more familiar than a season with such few games.
Last year, the end of the season was a true challenge: one match a week, some players were left out, not knowing when they'd get their next opportunity. It was difficult to maintain team cohesion with so much training time. This year will be different.
There will be fewer training sessions during the season, but the players' involvement will increase. Historically, this is a more familiar environment for the club. It’s far more exciting when matches come thick and fast.
