Despite a remarkable run of six consecutive victories, Manchester City's new head coach Enzo Marfeska is refusing to get carried away. The Italian, who has taken over the reins from Pep Guardiola, is acutely aware that past successes won’t shield him from criticism at the first sign of a slip-up.
In a candid press conference, he addressed the pressure that comes with managing at the Etihad:
I'm genuinely happy. As I mentioned at my first press conference, being at this club is a privilege, and following in the footsteps of a legend like Pep is an immense honour. I know that if I don’t win, it’s deemed a disaster, and that’s absolutely fair. But I don’t spend my days dwelling on who was here before me and how long they were in charge. I’m here to focus on what we can do better, to improve the team’s game, and to strive for victory. I’m thrilled with this streak of five or six wins, but right now, all attention is on the next match. I don’t look back; those games are history. We are focused on the upcoming game, after which there’s an international break.
On Sunday, Manchester City will face Sunderland in the final fixture before a three-week pause. A win will guarantee the Citizens at least a share of top spot in the Premier League table, provided Arsenal triumph over Brighton the day before.
