15-Second Brief
Selling Neco Williams to Nottingham Forest for £17 million is increasingly looking like a missed opportunity for Liverpool. The Welshman has become one of the most consistent defenders in the Premier League, while the Merseysiders are facing depth issues without an option to bring him back.

Neco Williams continues to show just how astute his move from Liverpool to Nottingham Forest has been. The Welshman has established himself as one of the key players for his new side, while Liverpool now find themselves uncertain on the flanks and without the option to re-sign the defender.

Williams left Anfield in 2022 in search of regular playing time, with Nottingham Forest paying £17 million for his services. Since then, the 25-year-old has significantly developed his game.

He is now a regular starter under Oliver Glasner and has played every minute of the first five Premier League matches this season.

Williams' impressive form has carried over to the Wales national team as well. In a recent match against Denmark, which Wales lost 1-0, he recorded 95 touches — the most of any player on the pitch.

He also made 11 passes into the final third, completed seven defensive actions, and won seven duels, playing a crucial role at both ends of the pitch.

Given Liverpool's current struggles with depth in their defensive ranks, the lack of a buy-back clause feels particularly glaring. In contrast to the situation with Jarrell Quansah, who does have a buy-back option scheduled for 2025, no such clause was included in the deal for Williams.

Moreover, Liverpool are already eyeing another Nottingham Forest defender, with the club reportedly interested in Murillo as a long-term addition to their central defence.

However, securing a winter transfer could be challenging as Forest are unlikely to let go of one of their key players mid-season. A more realistic approach for Liverpool might be to pursue Murillo next summer.
