Liverpool supporters have taken to social media to express their outrage after Arsenal's Bruno Guimaraes escaped a yellow card for celebrating his goal with fans during the Premier League match against Leeds United, which Arsenal won 2-1 at the Emirates.
In a moment of pure jubilation, the Brazilian midfielder leapt over the advertising hoardings to embrace the Gunners' fanbase in the stands after scoring the decisive goal. The referee chose not to penalise him with a booking.
However, this incident prompted an outcry among Liverpool fans, particularly in light of a recent episode involving their own forward, Alexander Isak. During an away match against Bournemouth, Isak sprinted towards Liverpool's away supporters to celebrate after scoring but received a yellow card for what was deemed a breach of the game’s decorum.
The referee at that time believed Isak's celebration could incite disorder in the stands and disrupted the flow of the match. Liverpool fans quickly spotted what they perceived as glaring double standards and inconsistency in the application of the rules following the Arsenal game.
Twitter has been ablaze with furious comments:
FalconLFC: “PGMOL is fraud.” (referring to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited)
Luis: “Sometimes I’m baffled by the officiating standards in the Premier League.”
6Times: “This is Anthony Taylor. Hugging and smiling with Arteta at the end.”
Redfxb: “This is a league that didn’t notice a club illegally attracting over a billion for 20 years to steal glory, so it’s no surprise there could be even worse cases of corruption and inconsistency in its affairs.”
R_Rynwa: “Seriously, this lack of consistency is bloody real, it’s driving me mad.”
