England U21 manager Lee Carsley is confident that 16-year-old Max Douman is on the verge of receiving a call-up to his squad. For the time being, the gifted Arsenal player will remain with the U19 team.
He's undoubtedly an exceptional talent. His promotion to the U21 team is inevitable given his gifts... but we must ensure we do this at the right time, so he can come with us, gain playing time, and compete with others in his position.
Carsley compared Douman's rapid ascent to the progress of Ethan Nwaneri, emphasising the need for young players to be patient if they wish to establish themselves in the senior national side for years to come.
The manager also acknowledged that he frequently discusses Douman's development with England's senior team coach Thomas Tuchel.
In March, Max Douman made history as the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history. This season, the youngster has already played 13 matches across all competitions. Recently, he shone brightly by scoring a brace against Ipswich in the EFL Cup.
