Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has shared his expectations for the new Premier League season. The ex-Blue highlighted key candidates for early sacking and evaluated the chances of his former club qualifying for the Champions League.
Mikel believes that the first manager to be shown the door will be Coventry City’s Frank Lampard. He pointed out that the former Chelsea boss appears to be running out of ideas and inspiration, as evidenced by their opening match against Arsenal. The club's hierarchy is unlikely to grant Lampard much time, given the pressing objective of retaining their top-flight status.
The second candidate for an early exit is Michael Carrick of Manchester United. Mikel noted that the atmosphere at Old Trafford resembles the struggles faced by Chelsea managers under new leadership, suggesting that a lack of balance could see Carrick relieved of his duties by around the tenth matchday.
Turning to Chelsea's prospects, Mikel emphasised that the absence of European commitments might theoretically allow them to compete in the title race. However, he considers a more realistic aim would be to finish in the top four. Achieving this target under Xabi Alonso is feasible, provided the club secures a reliable goalkeeper before the transfer window closes. Mikel expressed disappointment with the performances of Spanish keeper Robert Sanchez and urged the coaching staff to give young Belgian Mike Penders a starting role.
