Real Madrid are looking to swoop in for Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah. The Merseysiders sold him to Bayer but can buy him back for €70 million as a replacement for Virgil van Dijk.

Real Madrid are keen on signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah. This transfer could derail Liverpool's long-term plans to replace Virgil van Dijk.

According to Bild, the 23-year-old Englishman has become a top target for Los Blancos. The Spanish club's scouts are closely monitoring a player capable of comfortably operating as both a centre-back and right-back. Manager Jose Mourinho aims to bolster his defence with two signings next summer. An added factor in Madrid's favour is Quansah's close friendship with team star Jude Bellingham.

However, Liverpool are also on the case. The Merseysiders sold Quansah to Bayer for €35 million in 2025 but wisely retained the option to buy him back.

The buy-back clause stands at €70 million, which Liverpool can activate until June 15, 2027. It’s unlikely Leverkusen would entertain selling the player for less in the open market, as they previously rejected a £65 million offer from Arsenal last summer.

The Reds view Quansah as the perfect successor to veteran van Dijk, whose contract expires at the end of June. Now, Liverpool will have to not only meet the necessary fee but also persuade the player to favour a return to Anfield rather than a sunny move to Madrid.
