Jamie Redknapp: Coventry have shown they can compete in the Premier League

Coventry City’s narrow 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest has signified a pivotal moment for Frank Lampard's squad.

According to Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp, the club has finally proven it can contend at the Premier League level.

Redknapp highlighted that the start to the season has been particularly challenging for Coventry due to a tough fixture schedule, yet the team has begun to show signs of competitiveness.

“It’s been a really tough start for them considering the teams they’ve had to face. But there have been signs that they’ve thought, ‘We can compete at this level’.”

The former footballer noted how crucial this first win was, not just for the players, but for the supporters and the head coach as well.

“It was so important to get this win today. I’m happy for the players, delighted for the fans, and of course, for Frank Lampard.”

Redknapp believes that after moving up to the Premier League, Coventry needed to foster a belief in their own abilities and stop viewing matches against well-established opponents as unattainable.

“They’ve done a huge amount of work to get here, and now they need to make it work for them. They should shake off that inferiority complex: ‘Can we cope with this occasion and the level of the Premier League?’ Today, they showed they can.”

He also pointed out the team's disciplined defensive play as well as their ability to create chances on the break.

“They defended really well and looked dangerous on the counter-attack.”

The pundit further singled out individual performances from Coventry players, specifically highlighting Pinnock, Mfuni, and Bobby Thomas.
