Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has launched a fierce critique of Chelsea's hierarchy for their conduct during negotiations with Manchester City over the sale of 25-year-old Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
Carragher believes that the London club is behaving unprofessionally by setting deadlines and demanding a hefty sum after having put the player on the market themselves:
Chelsea are acting absolutely shamelessly. You can't indicate for weeks that a player is available for transfer and then suddenly throw Manchester City a deadline of 5pm, demanding £120 million as if you're doing them a favour.
If you genuinely want to get rid of Enzo, conduct negotiations like a serious football club. If you want him to stay, just say so directly.
This whole situation is disgraceful. Chelsea are trying to control the media narrative, the player’s future, and the entire transfer market. Elite clubs don’t operate like this.
Frankly, I would be shocked if Manchester City even considers responding to this.
