Jamie Carragher was left fuming over the officiating in Liverpool's match against Manchester City, which ended in a heavy 0-3 defeat for the Merseysiders. Most disturbing for the former defender was the red card handed to Ryan Gravenberch.
The Dutch midfielder had been solid for the first hour of the game but saw red after picking up a second yellow for a foul on Jeremy Doku, leaving his team short-handed.
However, Carragher believes the controversy started much earlier—with the first yellow card awarded for an incident involving Elliot Anderson.
Speaking out on the matter, he said:
That’s a really poor decision by the referee.
What frustrates me the most is that he wasn’t going to show a yellow card at all initially. The card only came after he thought Anderson might have been injured.
That should not affect whether a foul deserves a warning or not.
Following Gravenberch's dismissal, Liverpool conceded three times, suffering a crushing defeat at Anfield.
Andoni Iraola's team now sits ninth in the Premier League table and will seek to redeem themselves in the Champions League against LASK.
Meanwhile, Manchester City will face PSG in their next European fixture.
