England international and Al Ahli striker Ivan Toney has denied a charge of assaulting a man at a nightclub in central London. The footballer appeared before Westminster Magistrates' Court.
The incident occurred last December on Wardour Street in Soho. Reports indicate that a man named Saber Da Silva approached Toney asking for a photo and allegedly placed his arms around the player's neck or shoulders.
It is claimed that a conflict then ensued between the two. Toney faces allegations of headbutting Da Silva followed by a punch. These accusations form part of the charge and have yet to be established as fact by the court.
London Ambulance Service reportedly attended to three individuals at the scene, one of whom was later taken to hospital.
Toney has been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm. In court, he stated his innocence.
A representative for the striker commented on the situation:
Ivan is aware of the allegations against him and is understandably shaken by the events. He looks forward to the opportunity to clear his name in court.
Toney has opted for his case to be heard in the Crown Court with a judge and jury. The next hearing is scheduled for 29 October.
The 30-year-old forward currently plays for Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli.
