Former player Gary Neville has issued a stark warning that Manchester United are on the brink of serious problems should their defenders face injuries.
This summer, the club's hierarchy made the decision not to recruit new players for the defensive line.
“For top clubs competing in the Champions League, you have to ask: what happens if Luke Shaw gets injured? That could create a real problem... just take two of your most dominant defenders out for two months and you'll start conceding goals, and losing football matches,” Neville said.
Only new additions to the squad this season have been midfielders Andre Santos, Carlos Baleba, and Yuri Tielemans, alongside goalkeeper Karl Darlow, who joined on a free transfer.
Luke Shaw remains the only experienced left-back in the squad, with the club changing their mind at the last minute about selling 19-year-old Harry Amass.
In just a week, the Mancunians will embark on their Champions League campaign, where they face tough matches against Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid.
