Gary Lineker believes Alex Scott can pose a serious challenge to Declan Rice for a midfield position in the England squad. The 23-year-old Bournemouth midfielder shone in his first start for the national team, contributing to a resounding 7-0 victory against Croatia.
Scott played 70 minutes at the heart of the midfield alongside Elliot Anderson, earning praise for his calmness on the ball and ability to dictate the game's tempo.
Lineker particularly highlighted these qualities of the midfielder.
He stated:
Alex Scott had a very assured match. Of course, it's just one game, and against a team that looked poor that evening, but he was a vital part of what unfolded.
If you look at great teams that win tournaments, they know how to control matches. I feel Scott gives England something we haven't always seen in midfield.
Lineker drew a comparison between Scott's style and that of Rice:
Declan Rice has his strengths — he delivers set pieces beautifully and works tirelessly. But Scott brings a sense of calm and control. He rarely loses the ball and is constantly scanning the space.
I was extremely impressed. This is an incredibly confident start to his international career.
The former England striker suggested that Scott's emergence could provide the coaching staff with a new option in midfield.
Lineker added:
It will be interesting to see what Thomas Tuchel does now. Scott offers that level of control, while Rice is a completely different player.
Perhaps the coach now has another option, and Declan's place may not always be guaranteed. It might be early to say it, but that discussion is now possible.
