Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has stated that the club has yet to find a suitable replacement for him in the left-back position, even over ten years since he left. Evra departed Old Trafford in 2014 after eight successful seasons, during which he secured five Premier League titles and the Champions League.
“Since I left, I think around twenty players have filled that role. They’ve never truly found a proper replacement for me,” Evra emphasized, identifying a lack of stability and constant injuries as the primary issues the team has faced.
Position turmoil on the left flank
When Evra left in the summer of 2014, Luke Shaw joined the ranks, becoming the closest to solidifying the left-back spot for years. Unfortunately, recurring injuries led to ongoing shuffles in that position over time. Various players, including Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Ashley Young, Matteo Darmian, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Demetri Mitchell, Alex Telles, Brandon Williams, Diogo Dalot, Tyrell Malacia, and Sergio Reguilon have all taken their turn in that role. Due to a lack of alternatives, managers were sometimes forced to deploy non-specialists like Alvaro Fernandez and Sofyan Amrabat.
Reliability over potential
Evra humbly does not rank himself as the greatest left-back in Manchester United's history, bestowing that honour on Denis Irwin for his unwavering reliability. When asked who the best left-back has been since 2014, he surprisingly chose Ashley Young, noting that a player's ability to consistently perform at a high level is valued more than raw talent alone.
This issue remains pressing as we look towards 2026. Luke Shaw is entering his final season under contract, and the club is on the hunt for a dependable option for the future: along with Patrick Dorgu, younger prospects like Harry Amass and Diego Leon are under consideration.
