Crystal Palace striker and French international Jean-Philippe Mateta has approached FIFA in an attempt to contest the validity of his employment agreement with the London club.
The French forward is insisting that the option for contract extension for the final year, set to run until June 2027, should be deemed invalid. An independent Premier League tribunal had already reviewed the situation and concluded that the contract remains fully enforceable. In turn, FIFA ruled this week that any cancellation or revision of the agreement lies outside its jurisdiction, leaving the legal dispute unresolved.
The 30-year-old forward has netted 67 goals for the Eagles and played a pivotal role in their triumphs in the FA Cup and the Conference League. Back in January, Mateta was keen on a club move and came close to signing for AC Milan, but the transfer fell through at the last moment due to knee issues.
