Manchester United manager Michael Carrick faced criticism following defeats to Manchester City and a squandered two-goal lead, refuting claims of a mental crisis within the club.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has firmly dismissed suggestions that the recent series of defeats points to a significant mental crisis within the team.

The Red Devils have faced two painful blows in quick succession: first an unexpected defeat to Manchester City, who were down to ten men, followed by a disheartening collapse in a cup match where they squandered a two-goal lead. When pressed by reporters about his players' struggles during crucial moments, Carrick urged against hasty global conclusions:

All this has happened in just the last week. Certain circumstances have arisen in these matches. This certainly does not mean we suddenly have a huge systemic issue. My job is to maintain a balance in assessments.

The coach cautioned the press against proclaiming a long-term decline:

It's very easy to look at recent setbacks and immediately claim that it's been building for a long time. For us, this is part of the process: we must understand that such occurrences happen in football and make the correct conclusions to move forward.

When asked if the current squad plays with the courage and passion historically associated with the club, Carrick succinctly responded:

Recently, we've scored a decent number of goals.

In response to reporters highlighting defensive lapses and throwing away a two-goal lead, the manager emphasised that goal-scoring and conceding are two sides of the same coin:

I've had the privilege of playing in great teams. But understand this: we are playing really good, entertaining football and scoring plenty. That's a completely different story compared to suddenly conceding goals. These are different matters; it's essential for a team to have two faces. I'm not downplaying the issue – we clearly need to stop conceding so many, but we also create plenty in attack. Finding the right balance is crucial.
