Carlos Baleba is poised to make his debut for Manchester United right after the international break. The 22-year-old midfielder is nearing full recovery from an ankle ligament injury and is vying for a spot in the squad to face Tottenham on October 10.
United signed Baleba from Brighton in August for a fee that could rise to £70 million. However, an injury sustained during pre-season had kept him sidelined and out of manager Michael Carrick's plans for some time.
According to reports from The Athletic, the Cameroonian is recovering quicker than expected. He has been working on an individual training programme at Carrington and the coaching staff are pleased with his progress.
Baleba was included in the matchday squad for United's recent 1-1 draw against Fulham but did not make it off the bench.
The next step in his recovery could be a behind-closed-doors match involving the academy against Lausanne. If he comes through that unscathed, his return to action against Tottenham looks increasingly likely.
Baleba has signed a contract with United until 2031, with the option to extend for another year. Last season, he ranked in the top eight percent of Premier League players for total tackles and interceptions, and in the top one percent for second balls won.
The return of Baleba would provide Carrick with an additional option in midfield. United has also bolstered their ranks with the signings of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos over the summer, but Baleba's speed, power, and aggression when recovering the ball could be vital.
Given his long absence, it’s unlikely that Manchester United will throw Baleba straight into a full 90 minutes. However, if his recovery continues to progress well, fans could see him in action for the first time at Old Trafford on October 10.
