Brighton dominated the match, completely overpowering the Gunners in both battles for possession and pressing. They netted two goals before the half-time whistle, adding to their impressive tally of 16 goals this season, making them the league's most potent attacking force. With this victory, the Seagulls have soared to third place in the table. It has been since March 2008 that Arsenal last lost a league match while trailing by two goals at the break.
In the aftermath, Mikel Arteta openly acknowledged Brighton's superiority:
“Brighton were magnificent. In many neutral situations, the ball stayed with them. We made some glaring technical mistakes and opened up too much. The team was far from basic standards: we lost control in midfield, were shaky at the back, and created nothing up front. However, 15 of our players have just come back from the World Cup and started pre-season late. What the lads have achieved over the past month and a half is impressive. But this match serves as a huge lesson for all of us. We need to understand the level of commitment required to win at this level.”
Legendary striker Alan Shearer commented on BBC Radio 5 Live, noting the Gunners were fortunate not to face a heavier defeat:
They were absolutely destroyed. The final score could have easily been worse. Brighton played brilliantly, courageously, and with great organisation and physicality. They gave the champions no space and deserved to score six or seven goals.
