15-Second Brief
Opta's supercomputer has updated the chances for the 2026/27 Premier League title after five rounds: the championship battle has narrowed to a duel between Arsenal (43.7%) and Manchester City (39.8%), while Manchester United, Chelsea, and Aston Villa have seen their odds plummet.

Five rounds of the Premier League 2026/27 season have passed, and with each round, the Opta supercomputer's mathematical model receives more data to refine the championship odds of the contenders before the pause for international fixtures.

Leading the top division with a perfect record is Manchester City, while pre-season favourites Arsenal sit second, trailing by three points. Surprising entries in the top four include the fast-starting Brighton and Brentford.

Key title contenders: a two-horse race

Before the season kicked off, the supercomputer allocated Arsenal a 40.6% chance of retaining the title, with Manchester City trailing significantly at 19.6%. Liverpool (9.2%) and Manchester United (6.6%) followed them.

Despite a heavy defeat to Brighton last weekend, Arsenal remains the top contender, with their chances of triumph assessed at 43.7%. However, Manchester City is closely behind, with their championship odds rising to 39.8%. The immaculate form of the Manchester squad and Arsenal's slip-up has narrowed the title fight to these two sides, accounting for a staggering 83.4% of the entire championship probability.

Brighton is viewed as the third contender with a 5.7% shot at the title. The Merseyside club is yet to taste defeat under new manager Andoni Iraola, but draws in three of their five opening fixtures have seen their chances decline by 3.5 percentage points.

The team responsible for Arsenal's wobble, Brighton, is enjoying a fantastic spell. They lead the league in goals scored (16) and boast the best goal difference (+11), recently ending Arsenal's unbeaten run which had lasted for 155 days since April 19. In the supercomputer's model, Brighton has climbed to fourth place, with a 4.2% chance of claiming their first-ever title.

The odds for other clubs hover around the 1% mark:

  • Brentford – 1.2%
  • Everton – 1.1%
  • Chelsea – 1.0%
  • Manchester United – 0.9%

Risers of the rounds: the Marieska phenomenon and the Gunners' resilience

Manchester City has seen the most substantial rise in their championship probabilities, increasing by 20.2 percentage points. Under new boss Enzo Marieska, the club has recorded five straight victories in the league.

The Italian manager has become only the sixth head coach in Premier League history to win his first five matches in charge of a new team. Previously, Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea (six wins in a row), Pep Guardiola at Manchester City (six), Craig Shakespeare at Leicester City (five), Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea (five), and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United (six) achieved this feat.

Arsenal's chances have also risen by 3.0 percentage points compared to pre-season predictions, largely aided by the slip-ups of direct rivals Chelsea and Manchester United, while Liverpool has regularly dropped points with draws. Brighton is the only other team with a noticeable increase, more than doubling their chances from 2.0% to 4.2%.

Major falls: United's struggle, Villa and Chelsea's decline, Spurs' crisis

The big disappointment has been Manchester United. Despite salvaging a last-minute draw against Fulham, the Red Devils have only managed five points from five matches— the worst start since the 2014/15 season. While their advanced statistics look solid—leading the league with total shots (113) and touches in the opposition box (182)—the team suffers from chronic issues with converting chances. Consequently, their title odds have plummeted from 6.6% to a meagre 0.9%, marking the biggest fall in the league.

Aston Villa is also having a tough time, dropping by 3.7%. After securing their first win in the fifth round against a struggling Tottenham side, the Birmingham club lost three of their first four matches amid a significant summer squad overhaul.

Chelsea, under the guidance of Xabi Alonso, has seen a reduction of 2.8 percentage points. After starting the season explosively (eight goals in the first two matches), the Blues have since gone three matches without a win. This inconsistency has dropped their title chances to 1.0%.

Finally, a severe decline is noted at Tottenham, with a drop of 2.4%. For the first time since the 2008/09 season, Spurs find themselves at the bottom of the Premier League table after five matches played. Back then, they managed to claw their way to an eighth-place finish—a result their fans can only dream of at present.

With plenty of distance left in the season, expect the Opta supercomputer to keep recalibrating the league table as more match data accumulates.
