Aston Villa have initiated negotiations surrounding a possible transfer for Jean-Philippe Mateta. As reported by Sky Sports, the Midlands club has made their first approach to Crystal Palace about the French forward.
Their interest stems from the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Ollie Watkins, who is being pursued by Al-Hilal. Villa are proactively weighing up potential replacements for their star striker.
Mateta has been on the club's radar since at least the last January transfer window. The 29-year-old's contract with Crystal Palace is set to expire next summer.
Another option under consideration is Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson. The forward is expected to leave Stamford Bridge before the window closes, although he is also attracting interest from Napoli and other clubs.
In addition, Villa have approached AC Milan regarding Rafael Leao, as they look to strengthen their attacking options across multiple fronts.
