Tottenham defender Andy Robertson has called on the team to leave behind the troubles of the last two seasons and focus on the future. After five Premier League matches, the Londoners have managed just two points and find themselves languishing in the lower part of the table.
This summer, Spurs spent approximately £380 million on 10 new players, yet the season has got off to a dismal start.
‘We need to forget the past’
Robertson believes the heavy toll of last season’s struggles is still weighing on the squad.
‘They’ve had a couple of really tough seasons in terms of league position. To be fair, the club has had to work hard in the market and spend a fair amount of money. But I really do believe that now Tottenham is starting a new journey,’
Robertson said on the podcast The Overlap Stick to Football.
The Scottish international noted that the players still feel the repercussions of a campaign where they fought to stay in the Premier League.
‘You can see how much the previous season affected them. Perhaps we’re still guilty of carrying that burden on our shoulders,’
the defender added.
Robertson calls for a shift in mentality
The defender insists that the solution lies within the players themselves—both the seasoned veterans and the recent arrivals.
‘This is primarily a message from the manager. But it also pertains to me and the new signings. We need to let go of that. Now we must try to get Tottenham back to where we think they belong,’
Robertson stated.
The club has finished in 17th place for two consecutive seasons.
‘We need to maintain that mindset at all times’
Robertson also highlighted the psychological aspects affecting the team’s performance.
He pointed to the recent Carabao Cup match against Liverpool, which Tottenham lost 3-1.
‘At certain moments, we played really well there, but then we’d concede a goal and it feels like everything drops. After we score to make it 1-2, suddenly we’re all eager to get the ball. We need to demonstrate that state of mind consistently,’
the player emphasised.
